A hearty and delicious Bündnerfleisch sandwich is perfect for this lifestyle: it is easy to prepare at home, convenient to take anywhere and provides the valuable protein you need for energy at any time of day.
Bündnerfleisch is a natural source of protein: 100 g contains 40 g of protein. Combined with sourdough or wholemeal bread, this sandwich provides the energy you need on the go. Pack it with a napkin in a paper bag, and your tasty snack is ready to go.

3. Mid-morning snack: a colourful Bündnerfleisch bento box
The Japanese show us how it is done: they arrange visually appealing snacks in a bento box, usually a stainless-steel container with several compartments. They choose a variety of ingredients, such as protein – for example fish – filling carbohydrates such as rice and fresh vegetables. The colourful components are attractively arranged so that every snack becomes an enjoyable experience. That is exactly what we are doing here.
The star of our bento box is, of course, Bündnerfleisch. We complement it with crunchy almonds, fine Swiss rustic brown bread and fresh cucumber. It not only looks appealing, but also satisfies hunger at work or during a school break.
Bento boxes can be assembled however you like, making them a great way to use up whatever is in the kitchen cupboards and refrigerator. The basic components of a varied bento box might include:
something crunchy, such as almonds, hazelnuts or seeds
something rich in protein, such as Bündnerfleisch or cheese cubes
something filling, such as slices of bread, rice or pasta salad
something fresh, such as cucumber, carrots or tomatoes
and something sweet, such as dried apple rings, grapes or raisins.
Recipe for one Bündnerfleisch bento box:
INGREDIENTS
- 5–8 slices of Bündnerfleisch
- 25 g almonds, or alternatively walnuts or hazelnuts
- 1–2 small slices of rustic brown bread; toast them for a more roasted flavour
- 10 small cheese cubes, such as Graubünden mountain cheese, cream cheese or Gruyère
- A few dried apple rings, or alternatively raisins or grapes, optional
- 6 small snack cucumbers or 1 large cucumber, sliced into rounds
METHOD
- Roll up 5–8 slices of Bündnerfleisch and arrange them in the bento box.
- Add 25 g of almonds.
- Place 1–2 small slices of rustic brown bread in the box.
- Add 10 small cheese cubes.
- Add a few dried apple rings to the box.
- Add 6 small snack cucumbers.
Thanks to the Bündnerfleisch and cheese, this bento box is rich in protein – 40 g of protein per 100 g of air-dried meat – and therefore keeps you feeling full for a long time. For a gluten-free version, replace the bread with rice or sesame crackers, or use gluten-free bread.
→ Perfect as a healthy lunch at work, a mid-morning snack box for children or a quick dinner before training.
